Facebook is counting on the same relative inertia that Twitter has so carefully cultivated. The calculation is that 175 million people are less likely to move away from something than they are to wait and see what is going to happen.

For the advanced user, an open Facebook stream and Track delivers Twitter track for free. What Twitter is now doing to a smaller competitor (FriendFeed) will not play as well with its bigger rival. Imagine what a marketing bonanza for Facebook Pages would occur if contests that depend on realtime entries (like the 30th caller to a radio station) were off limits to Twitter users whose tweets are delayed by 4 minutes, let alone 40.

Great post about celebrity vs authority or why it’s better to care about who you follow online than who follows you.

Now, to be fair, the post that started this mess, from Loic Le Meur, had a good goal: to make it possible to find better tweets in searches. In other words, to separate the news from the noise. Except Loic used the word “authority” and hooked it to popularity: the number of followers one has.

…
My goal, though, is to have smarter conversations every day. Does anyone else care about that goal?

I do.

Also don’t miss Scoble interviewing Tim O’Reilly. There are two parts. First a flip-cam quick interview where Tim answers some questions from FriendFeed users (24 minutes unedited). Second, the ‘real’ interview that is being hailed as the ‘interview of the year‘.

UPDATE 2008: So I had my blog criticized today, and decided to make this page my Contact area.

Post a comment here or find me on one of my many online locations. My email address is also on chrisheath.us as well as other places around the net… such as:

Original post: So I set up a myspace account the other day because a bunch of people at work have set them up. One cool think I’ve found out is that you can register your schools and organizations, and find out who else on myspace has registered. I’ve already checked out myspace people from my high school. I’m going to check out the other schools next.
(and yes, I know that the ‘evil’ News Corp owns myspace)

I also have a facebook account which is linked via a badge on my myspace profile. Facebook is centered around the type of networking that I found hidden deep in myspace (as mentioned above).

And for good measure I’ll link to my digg profile.

Other online profiles and sites of mine can be found in the My Sites section of the navigation bar to the left on this site.

There, that should do it.
~Chris
UPDATE 2009:I’ve been using FriendFeed mainly, since it aggregates all my online ‘stuff’. FriendFeed has real-time live updating and commenting along with distributed moderation and powerful search. If you try it and don’t get it or can’t figure it out let me know and I’ll help you out.
